MACAAL: MATERIAL INSANITY EXPOSURE

Located at the Golf Al Madeen, the MACAAL Museum opened more then a year ago and is already considered one of a major exhibition space in Marrakech! Gathering more than 30 artists from the continent and its diaspora, Material Insanity explores the material and its symbolic significance in a plurality of dimensions and formal experiences. Through installations made from everyday objects or materials, the exhibition combines various discourses in the service of a new aesthetic.

With an immersive scenography created by the architect and artist Zineb Andress Arraki, the artworks of Material Insanity question the relationship between form and meaning, while sublimating the potentialities of the medium itself.

What is most striking when approaching the medina of Marrakech is the incredible color of its walls, a warm pink due to the clayey soil of which they are made.

SAADIAN TOMBS

Located next to the mosque of the Kasbah, the Saadian tombs are one of the only remains of the Saadian dynasty that reigned over the golden age of Marrakech between 1524 to 1659. In the early 18th century, Sultan Moulay Ismail had indeed decided to remove all traces of the magnificence of this dynasty by demanding the destruction of all remaining vestiges. He dared not, however, commit the sacrilege of destroying their burials and ordered that the entrance to the necropolis should be completed. The secret remained well kept until 1917, date of the rediscovery of the site of the Saadian tombs.

DAQQA MARRAKCHIA…WHAT IS IT!?

It is the musical signature of Marrakech as it’s an integral part of the oral cultural heritage of the ocher city. The tanners gave the origin of this tradition that goes back to the Saadian dynasty, the rhythm of this music reminding their daily tanning work. The Daqqa is an exclusively male musical style, played on percussion instruments, mainly the taarija and the t-tara and the kraks. This traditional and popular music is mainly played at the Ashura celebration (10th day of the Muslim New Year). To mark its 10th anniversary, the Maison de la Photographie celebrates this musical heritage of Marrakech on 31st May on the Jamaa El Fna square. SAVE THE DATE!
