DAR EL BACHA – MUSEUM OF THE CONFLUENCES

Dar El Bacha is located at the entrance of the Medina.. It is considered one of the most beautiful palaces of the city. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century by Thami El Glaoui (named Pacha of Marrakech by Sultan Moulay Youssef). In 2017, the Dar El Bacha Palace is transformed into the Museum of the Confluences. Rooms with columns covered with Zellij and chiselled stuccoes are laid around an arabian garden. The rest of the decoration is breathtaking: cedar doors worked by hand, ceilings painted with geometric and floral motifs. As you can see, Dar El Bacha is already a museum in itself!

QOUBBA ALMORAVIDE

Koubba Almoravide (or Koubba Ba’adiyin / Barudiyin) is a small monument to Marrakech, dating back to the 12th century, was erected by the Almoravide dynasty. Almoravid Koubba is located near the Marrakech Museum and about 40 meters south of the Ben Youssef Mosque. It is the only surviving example of Almoravide architecture in Marrakech. The building was built in 1117 and subsequently renovated in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. It was rediscovered in 1948 and excavated in 1952, after being buried under one of the dependencies of the Ben Youssef mosque. Once the dome was used for the ablutions before prayer (based on Khettara’s revolutionary hydraulics, drainage systems) and also had a system of toilets, showers and taps for drinking water, probably therefore, was part of an Almoravide mosque. The interior is richly decorated with floral motifs (pine cones, palm trees and acanthus leaves) and calligraphy. The epigraphic decoration, which covers the frames and borders, is notable for the fact that the inscription is the oldest in cursive writing of the Maghreb in North Africa. The materials used are marble and cedar wood. At the entrance and at the top of the prayer hall there is the inscription:

“I was created for science and prayer, by the prince of believers, descended from the prophet Abdullah, the most glorious of all the caliphs. Pray for him when you enter the door, so you can meet your highest expectations”

BAB AGNAOU GATE

Bab Agnaou is one of the most famous gates in Marrakech. Its construction is attributed to the Almohad caliph Abu Yusuf Ya’qub al-Mansur and was completed around 1188 or 1190. The gate was the main public entrance to the royal kasbah (citadel) in the southern part of Marrakesh’s medina. The Kasbah, built by Yaqub al-Mansur, is the site of the nearby El Mansouria Mosque (or Kasbah Mosque) and the Saadian Tombs behind it, as well as the El Badi Palace and the main Royal Palace (Dar al-Makhzen) of la city.
