ERG CHIGAGA DESERT

Who would not like, at least once in their life, to spend the night in the desert? I bet everyone! If you come to Morocco you absolutely have to go to the desert … yes but which one? Well friends, in Morocco there are two Erg (dune complexes … so they are called) where you can go: Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga. Erg Chebbi I think everyone knows it since it is the one located in Merzouga, about 500 km from Marrakech and characterized by an intense red sand. But have you ever made it to Erg Chigaga? In other words, in the extreme south of Morocco on the border with Algeria? In this area the paved road reaches the last village (M’hamid) before absolute nothing!

KHAMLIA VILLAGE

The tiny village of Khamlia, inhabited by less than 150 people, is now known all over the world. According to some sources, Khamlia derives from the Arabic term Khamila which designates a soil with an abundance of vegetation. Here there are many descendants of the slaves led, through the famous Timbouctou, from Senegal, Sudan and Mali, who brought this hypnotic music with them. Music capable of inducing a state of trance, thanks to low and rhythmic sounds, songs and the rhythm of the clapping of hands. The Berbers of Merzouga have always defined Khamlia “the village of blacks”. A true cross-section of Black Africa that managed to survive in the heart of the Sahara. There are no hotels here but you can visit it if you take the Merzouga desert tour. The village is in fact located about 7 km away, surrounded by absolute nothingness and close to the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes.
In fact, this village is supported by tourism because in some houses of the village you can enjoy Gnaoua music and dances while sipping a delicious mint tea and above all learn about the traditions, customs and lifestyle of the Gnaoua.

OZOUD WATERFALLS

Approximately 167 km northeast of Marrakech are the most spectacular waterfalls in Morocco, an experience that would be a real shame to miss. It is possible to carry out this excursion in the space of a day, by renting a car or by booking a group or private excursion.
The waterfalls are a popular attraction for both tourists and Moroccans, especially on weekends and in the summer. The Oued Ozoud (which means river Ozoud: the term Ozoud in Berber means “olives” and refers to the cultivation of olive trees in the area), falls for about 110 meters on three levels in the gorge of Oued El Abid.

OURIKA VALLEY

Ourika is one of the most beautiful and spectacular valleys in the High Atlas and its proximity to Marrakech (about 45 minutes) makes it a wonderful destination for a day trip. The slopes of the valley rise above the expanse of emerald green fields of the valley floor. In the summer, when Marrakech is choking on the heat, the valley is crowded with people fleeing the city who come here to camp and have a picnic beside the cool waters. The valley, located east of the Jebel Toubkal, is popular with skiers in winter and trekking enthusiasts in spring and summer.
